Brewster Swimmers Perform Well at State Championships

DAN KRUZE
BREWSTER—The Brewster High boys swim team closed out its season by sending senior John Carr and sophomore Charlie Carr to the state finals. The two competed in three events over the final weekend in February at Erie Community College in Buffalo.

SWIMMING

Charlie Carr swam in both the 100 meter backstroke, and 100 meter butterfly. In the butterfly he set a new personal best with a time of 53.67, placing him 22nd overall. His time of 55.5 in the backstroke placed him 27th.

Despite strong performances throughout the year, John Carr only qualified for the 100 meter freestyle after being diagnosed with mono prior to the qualifiers. He entered seeded 34th, but finished 25th with a time of 49.01.

Even though he finished outside the top ten John didn't walk away from the state meet empty handed. The coaches of Section One awarded him with the good sportsmanship award.

“He was recognized for his positive attitude, and the fact that he made everybody around him laugh the whole weekend,” said coach Clare Carr

With his time swimming for the Bears now behind him, John Carr will look to continue swimming at either Binghamton University or Ithaca College this fall.

“It will be a loss for the team, because he was undefeated all season, in the dual meets.,” Carr said. “The good news is we'll have Niki (Tchobanov), Charlie, and Mike Quinn coming back. We're looking forward too a good season.”

Both John Carr and Charlie Carr were named All-Section and All- League, sophomore Niki Tchobanov was also named All-League.
