Carmel Skaters Fall to Mamaroneck in Playoffs

DAN KRUZE
CARMEL—Despite another great goaltending performance from senior Marc Glaviano, the Carmel High hockey team came up short in the second round of the Division I playoffs. The seventh-seeded Rams (11-10) lost 4-0 to the number two seed Mamaroneck( 18-4).

Playing at Hommocks on Tuesday, the Rams came out ready to play and didn't let the heavy odds against them intimidate them.

“They weren't intimidated from the start, It was the first time we were down there,” said coach Tom Domicoli. “It's a pretty wild environment, they call it the jungle.”

Glaviano did everything he could to give the Rams a chance for the upset, stopping 45 shots in the loss.

“Again Marc Glaviano, he played very very well,” said coach Tom Domicoli. “He's a competitor, he was looking forward to the game and he was very very up for the game. He played well.”

Mamaroneck took advantage of an early mistake by the Rams to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

“The first goal our defense, kind of stood around and watched the puck,” Domicoli said. “Marc came out last minute and tried to clear it out, they kept it in and it was kind of an easy goal. I was afraid that that goal would open up the floodgates, but we came back and held them for the first period. We walked out of there, and were confident going into the second.”

With the Rams holding their ground after the bad goal the score remained at 1-0 for the rest of the period.

In the second period Mamaroneck continued to fire away at Glaviano, and their skill coupled with another Rams mistake allowed them to take a 3-0 lead into the third.

“They're a very well coached team, and they're very efficient at way they do,” Domicoli said. “We obviously haven't run into a team with that caliber talent. They were big, they're talented and we didn't see anything like that this year.”

The Rams took 19 shots and continued to battle throughout the third, generating some scoring chances of their own but it wasn't enough.

“Our usual forwards, Jackie Barnes and Josh Serpe, played well,” Domicoli said. “We had some good scoring chances. We had a few chances to put in some goals, but we just missed the net. I think we tried to get a little too fine against their goalie.”

Mamaroneck added one more goal in the third to ice the game. Despite the loss the Rams have a lot to be proud of. Defenseman Scott Ericsen played his best game of the season against one of the most prolific offensive teams in the section.

“If you had to ask me other than Marc who are best player was, it was unquestionably Scott Ericsen, said Domicoli. “As far as a defenseman goes, he was very consistent at the end of the year. It's a shame that the season is over because he was playing very well, he always puts a good effort in. But tonight he went above and beyond, he played great.”
