Carmel’s DiCarlo Vies for Legislature Seat
A veteran educator and Carmel’s Deputy Supervisor and Councilman, Anthony DiCarlo, hopes to have a new title next January 1—Putnam County Legislator.
DiCarlo, who was joined by Putnam County Executive Robert Bondi, Carmel Supervisor Kenneth Schmitt, Carmel’s Highway and Superintendent Mike Simone, as well as family and friends, told a news conference Saturday at Carmel Town Hall that he will seek the District No. 9 seat now held by Legislator Tony Fusco.
The seat represents constituents in the Mahopac and Mahopac Falls areas as well as a small section of Carmel.
DiCarlo said his decision came after much soul-searching: “My family and close friends have encouraged me to proceed following six and one-half great years on the Carmel Town Board. The experience has been an incredible one since each day has brought new experiences and challenges that have made our town one of the most stable in New York State.”
DiCarlo hopes to bring his expertise to the county level: “People are hurting and the legislature must work closely with the executive’s office to improve our quality of life. I am a good listener and have served the public all my life. I have been blessed over the past two years by chairing the Zoning Compliance Committee in Carmel. People now feel that their voices are being heard and that changes are being made.”
DiCarlo called partnerships “paramount to our success. America finds itself in some of its most difficult financial times. Elected officials have to be able to think outside the box and my 18-plus years as a school administrator has given me the opportunity to understand budgets, finance, and unfunded mandates. Working together in a consortium is the way to go.”
DiCarlo promised to run a positive campaign: “It would be very easy to attack the incumbent but this is not my style. I will campaign from the heart and speak my mind but will make decisions on what’s best for the people of Putnam County.”
DiCarlo is the third man in the race.
Legislator Fusco told the COURIER several weeks ago that he would seek reelection while Neal Sullivan, a Mahopac businessman who co-chairs the Putnam County Committee in Fiscal Responsibility, also announced his intention to run.
Supervisor Schmitt praised DiCarlo’s record of achievement on the town council: “The man truly cares about the residents of our town, and once elected will also be concerned about residents of the entire county. Carmel’s loss will be Putnam County’s gain.”
Executive Bondi also lauded DiCarlo’s achievements: “The man brings a work ethic combined with great intelligence to his candidacy. Anthony is a family man who wants only the best for his family as well as the family of Putnam County. I support him 100 percent.”
DiCarlo is currently employed as principal of the William Cottle Elementary School in Tuckahoe. He previously served as principal in the Lakeland School District.
DiCarlo and his wife, Rosemarie, have been married for 24 years. The couple has been blessed with four children— Anthony, Daniel, Mark, and Dana.
