The quiet hamlet of Mahopac was rocked Tuesday when a gunman entered the TD BankNorth branch off Route 6N in the downtown business district and brandished a handgun, demanding money.

A teller turned over an undetermined amount of cash and the bandit fled on foot along Route 6N.

Carmel Police Chief Michael Johnson said bystanders walking in the area moments after the heist took place reported seeing a man picked up in a green colored SUV that was driven by a black man wearing dreadlocks.

The chief identified the bank robber as a black man, standing 5-feet 6-inches tall with short black hair and weighing 150 pounds. The suspect was last seen wearing a green fleece pullover and a blue visor.

Cops rushed to the scene. Carmel Police Department personnel were assisted by members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and Brewster and Somers State Police.

The FBI was also called in, since Chief Johnson said the robbery was similar to other bank hold-ups throughout the Hudson Valley in recent weeks, and police are trying to determine if the same man is responsible.

Throughout the afternoon Tuesday, police scoured the Mahopac business district, asking shopkeepers if they had seen anything suspicious earlier in the day. The chief also said private business video systems were being analyzed in an attempt to get a better description of the vehicle used by the robber for his getaway.

No one was injured.

Chief Johnson has asked anyone with information to call Carmel PD at 628- 1300. All calls will be kept confidential.
