BREWSTER—No question about it - the Brewster High girls basketball team was hoping for a second consecutive trip to the Westchester County Center.

But a surging Peekskill squad derailed the Bears’ playoff hopes, sending Brewster home after a loss in the Class A quarterfinals. Brewster had beaten Tappan Zee in the opening round.
So the goal of reaching the County Center was never realized. But with a 15-5 record overall, and a thirdplace finish in League 1-B, the 2009- 2010 season was still a strong one for the Bears and veteran coach Doris Schukin.
“I think it was a very good season,” Schukin said. “We fell one game short of our goal… we wanted the County Center, so we were a little disappointed with that. But we’re already gearing up for next year.”
Three players earned post-season honors.
Junior team captain and guard/forward Emily Tapio led Brewster in scoring, rebounds and assists, and also scored her 1000th career point during the season. She is believed to be the first player from Brewster to do it as a junior. Tapio was named All-Section and All-League.

“Emily is a leader for us in so many ways,” Schukin said of Tapio. “On the court with scoring, and she also knows the offense well, sees the floor, and is a stabilizing factor on the floor. She’s one of the best to come out of the program.”
Sophomore guard Lauren Quattrocchi led the team in steals, and earned All-Section Honorable Mention and All-League status.
“Lauren had a very good season for us,” the coach said. “She was a little inconsistent early, then against Briarcliff came up with 29 and got going. And she’s one of our best defensive players.”

Sophomore guard Marisa Delzio picked up All-League honors. “She’s probably our quickest player, and one of our best defenders,” Schukin said. “She had a solid season.”
The coach also mentioned strong contributions from senior forward Vania Simpri and senior guard/forward Alyssa D’Ottavio.
Brewster loses three seniors to graduation, including two starters, so Schukin is looking for another good season next winter.
“We’ve got some new kids coming in, and our top three starters are back,” she said. “We’ll have some JV players coming up, and some of the kids will step into roles. We’ll probably be playing in Class AA as well, so that’s a concern.”
