Former sheriff candidate claims mysterious attorneys snagged him in lies
A former Putnam County sheriff candidate who has admitted to election fraud has written a letter seeming to claim he was forced to perjure himself last fall. Last October, Andrew DeStefano, a former NYPD captain, pleaded guilty to charges that he filed fraudulent signatures in connection with the heated GOP primary. Full Story
Fire Truck!
Jim Tompkins couldn’t believe his eyes: the trash hauler employed by Tompkins Disposal Service of Carmel stopped his rig along Fowler Avenue in the county seat last week to pick up neighborhood rubbish. After dumping a pail into the recently refurbished bright yellow truck, Tompkins noticed a fireball on the ground beneath the engine compartment of the rig. Full Story
Health Care Reform Includes Student Loan Overhaul

On Tuesday, March 30, President Obama signed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation of 2010 into law. Though the bill was primarily intended to fix the Senate’s Christmas Eve health care bill to meet the demands of the U.S. House, it also includes a massive overhaul of the way student loans are serviced. Hay Proposes Sales Tax Revenue Sharing
Putnam is currently one of only a handful of 57 counties outside of New York City which does not share sales tax with its towns and villages.
If veteran Legislator Tony Hay of Southeast has his way, Putnam will be joining its neighbors in Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, and Orange counties that currently share their sales tax dollars with local municipalities. Full Story
