Kohl’s staff spruces up school
National Volunteer Week was celebrated in fine fashion at Kohl’s Department Store in Southeast.
A dozen employees donned Kohl’s A-Team tee shirts last week, and, with shovels and rakes in hand, visited St. James School in Carmel and the Kent Schools Complex and planted flowers, laid mulch, raked, and painted. Full Story

A tree grows in Brewster
A group of young men returned to their alma mater at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School and admired a flowering plum tree they planted a decade ago.
The handsome seniors at Brewster High School were joined last week by the principal of the elementary school Dr. Robin Young and by their former Cub Scout den mothers Noelle Smith and Christine Monahan. Full Story
Breakfast is ‘out’ in the Mahopac School District
Mahopac school children are not interested in having breakfast in school.
District Clerk Dorothy Gilroy reported last week the results of a breakfast survey that indicated of the 1,363 responses, 87 percent of the district’s children are not interested in the school’s breakfast program for the 2010-11 school year. Full Story

Bear sightings
There’s a bear in them thar hills!
A black bear described as weighing in excess of 150 pounds and measuring six feet long was seen on Canopus Hollow Road, Dennytown Road, and Indian Brook Road by several people last week. A bear was also observed on Way-Across Road in Mahopac on Friday and Saturday. Full Story
Children’s Expo and Safety Fair is Saturday
Raising awareness about child safety and health, from fire prevention to the proper fitting of bicycle helmets, is on tap Saturday when the Child Advocacy Center of Putnam County hosts its 5th annual Children’s Expo and Safety Fair.
The fair, scheduled from 10am to 2pm at Brewster High School, is free of charge and open to all children and their families. Full Story
