CARMEL—The Carmel High baseball team continued its hot play last week, hammering out a 7-2 League 1-B win over Brewster last Friday night at Dutchess Stadium, after handing Yorktown an 8-3 loss in the first game of a double-header. One night earlier at Carmel, the Rams set the tone by handing Brewster a 14-4 thumping in another league game.

“Carmel is a tough team,” Bears manager Ed Mulvihill said. “They don’t hurt themselves. We played well, we actually played with attitude and passion.”

Mulvihill did not see passion from his team in Thursday night’s drubbing at the hands of Carmel.

“Sean Trainor got the start, and he left with a 4-2 lead after five innings,” Mulvihill said. “Dan Cerone – who has been great all year – came in next, but he just didn’t have it that day… and Carmel had a 12-run sixth. But we played without passion the entire game. We had a good talk about it, and we played much better Friday.”

Viola got the win for the Rams (10-1, 4-0), while Cerone took the loss.

Rojas finished with four RBI for Carmel, and went 4-for-5 with a double and a triple. Shilling knocked in three runs and went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, Harlin and John Lauria each had two RBI, Austin Barbosa, Bob O’Malley and Palmiero each had one RBI, and Viola doubled.

Ryan Anderes belted a two-run homer, Shilling was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Viola tripled and drove in a run, and Rojas went 2-for-4.

In Brewster’s loss to Lakeland (8-2) the prior Wednesday, Justin McCarthy picked up the victory for the Hornets, while Byrnes took the loss for Brewster.

David Judisky homered, doubled, and drove in two runs for Lakeland. Steve Lepere had an RBI for Brewster.

“McCarthy did a great job,” Mulvihill said. “He spotted the fastball, and kept everything low. Chris had a little trouble keeping the ball down, and he got hit.”

Brewster was set to host Pearl River tonight (Thursday) at 4:30pm, and the Bears are at Yorktown Friday at 4:30. Carmel hosts Panas Friday at 4:30pm.
