Special Olympians Compete with Pride

Cyclists kick off the event Cyclists kick off the event The Hudson Valley Special Olympics competition returned to Brewster High School Saturday.

More than 600 athletes from communities throughout Putnam, Westchester, and Dutchess counties were greeted by hundreds of supporters and volunteers for the 38th annual event.

Athletes were greeted by the high school marching band as well as a group of cyclists who will be participating next month in the 200-mile Patterson Vermont trek to raise money for Special Olympics through the Bresnan Bike Tour.

Stephen Booth, 17 and Mike Chastant, 16, two students at BHS, received an ovation when they, along with high school assistant principal Kieran Stack, ran a lap carrying the flaming Olympic torch.

Stephen said he was “wild man. This is the coolest day of my life. All of these people in Brewster are the best.”
