Happy 235th Birthday to the United States Army
—Information provided by U.S. Army Center of Military History
During the Spring of 1775 many of the amateur volunteer forces of the American colonies, which made up the colonial army, were summoned to fight the British troops near Boston. Since no one commander was necessarily in charge, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress requested for the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia to assume authority of all militia.
Though there is no written record, it is said that John Adams requested that the Boston troops be adopted as the U.S. Army on June 14, which today is known as Flag Day. Congress also voted $200,000 to support the soldiers of Boston and New York City, and they formed a committee to create a draft of rules and regulations for the government of the Army.

"Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master."
