Brewster Bears Golfers Enjoyed Solid Spring
Miller earns All-State honors again; Delzio, Fanelli, Bell named All-League
BREWSTER—After coaching the Brewster High golf team for the 40 years, coach Mike Mostransky is stepping away after yet another tremendous year. The Bears went 11-1 en route to their fifth straight league title, while Mike Miller appeared in his fourth straight state championship tournament.
“It was a very good year,” Mostransky said. “We were pleased to win, we were expecting to compete but we weren't sure we would win.”
After leading the team to the league title, Miller came up short in his attempt for a state championship. He was beaten by one stroke when his opponent sunk a 15-foot putt on the final hole to seal the victory. The Penn State bound senior was named All-State, All- Section, and All-League for the fourth straight year.
“In the 40 years I've been coaching, he's in the top five golfers for the section,” Mostransky said. “He's one of the most decorated golfers in the section, and he's a very personable young man. Brewster will miss him, he's one the kids I'll remember for a long time.”
Miller led the team throughout the year, shooting two rounds under 30 and posted a below par scoring average throughout the year.
In addition to Miller, the Bears had three others named All-League. Marc Delzio, Joe Fanelli, and Kevin Bell all earned All-League honors.
“Marc was a big part of our winning this year,” Mostransky said. “He played two or three for us all year. Fanelli was probably our most improved, and it was Kevin's first year on the team so he was a pleasant surprise.”
The Bears will lose six seniors to graduation, most of whom were starters.
“I think it will be a rebuilding situation,” Mostransky said. “Next year we won't have a lot of the team returning so it's going to be a bit of a rebuild.”
