JFK Boys Tenni s Team Takes First Ever League Title
SOMERS—The John F. Kennedy Catholic High School boys Tennis team won the League championship for the first time in school history. Four years ago when coach Frank Zappoli took over the team, their record was 2-11, it’s safe to say that the Gaels have come a very long way since then. Coach Zappoli hailed this year’s team for being one of the closest and hardest working he has ever dealt with, and now they have a title to show for their effort.
This season the Gaels went 5-1 in their league on route to the league title. They ran through their league despite one speed bump in Croton, their strong performance contributed to their coach Zappoli being awarded coach of the year in the league.
“This was the hardest working group I have ever had,” said Zappoli. “They showed up early and stayed late almost every night and supported each other and stuck together as a team. Winning the league was our goal from the start and I’m proud they were able to get it.”
Seniors Matthew Burke and Nick Cartaya were handed All-League Honors.
“Matt was our captain, he and Brad each went 5-1 on the season. They were our number one and two singles players respectively” said Zappoli.
Liam Perry and Brad Huntington were also awarded All-League Honors as sophomores.
“Nick and Liam were my first doubles team, they also made it to the league finals where they lost to Croton” said Zappoli.
Zappoli also mentioned Joseph Oddo, Bill Crockett and Tom Crecco as key contributors.
“Oddo was one of our guys who played every day. He was a senior leader and will be missed a lot,” said Zappoli. “Crockett and Crecco both stepped up big time. They didn’t play a ton last year but they got chances this year and took advantage of it.”
The Gaels will lose seniors Burke, Cartaya and Oddo. Despite the major losses coach Zappoli expects them to compete next year.
“We should be competitive,” said Zappoli. We are not in a terribly strong league and we bring back some good kids and they work hard. The way we have gotten better every year I expect us to continue that trend.”
