Arlene E. Smith Yager

Arlene E. Smith Yager, 93, passed away peacefully in Salt Point, NY. She was born in Somers. Arlene was a graduate of Mahopac High School, the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, and SUNY New Paltz.

Arlene has touched many lives as an educator and Christian. She began her teaching career at Big Elm School, a one-room school in Patterson, in 1943. She taught junior high English and Social Studies in the Putnam Valley School District from 1948 to 1971.
 
After retiring and moving to Tucson, AZ, Arlene taught English to college students at the University of Arizona as a Lau Bach Volunteer. In 1998, Arlene received the J.C. Penney Golden Award for outstanding volunteer service of 25 years. She continued teaching until 2002 when she moved back east with her daughters.
 
Arlene has been a vital member of the Methodist church throughout her life, serving as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, and holding offices with the United Methodist Women, MYF leader, and chairman of many committees within the church.
 
Arlene loved her family, people, traveling, and teaching. She was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin M. Yager, in 1976; her brother Mervin Smith, and her parents, Howard and Minnie Shear Smith. Arlene is survived by her loving daughters, Phyllis and her husband Richard Chapman of North Syracuse, and Janet and her husband William Yager of Salt Point; five grandchildren, William and his wife Darlene Yager, Jr.; Sarah and her husband Jeffrey Cross; Amy Lisi; Richard and his wife Gail Chapman, Jr.; Susan and her husband Shawn Herbert and 8 great grandchildren, Ben, Ashley, Austin, Dominick, Lindsay, Anthony, Brian, and Nicole.
 
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 29, 2010 from 4-7 pm at Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook, NY 12545. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, 11am at the Verbank Methodist Church in Verbank, NY.
 
Burial will follow in Union Valley Cemetery, in Mahopac. Memorial donations may be made to Lake Mahopac Methodist Church and the Diabetes Association. If you would like to leave an online condolence please visit HudsonValleyFuneralHomes.com
