Was Expensive Bridge Actually a Cost Saving Measure?
Senator Vincent Leibell told the Courier Tuesday that the Hudson Valley Trust pedestrian bridge in Carmel actually saved money for the town. Last week, the Courier featured the publicly-funded bridge, which was billed as a way to promote tourism, birdwatching, and other activities. Full Story

Live Healthy Putnam Initiative Expands
The Putnam County Department of Health, headquartered in Brewster, is pleased to announce the expansion of the Live Healthy Putnam initiative established more than three years ago to improve the health and well being of Putnam County residents. Green Surrounding is a Brewsterbased landscaping company that volunteered to partner with Keep Putnam Beautiful to improve the hillside at the intersection of NYS Routes 6 and 312. Hudson Valley FCU and Putnam FCU Merge
Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union (HVFCU) announced on June 24 that Putnam Federal Credit Union has merged with HVFCU. HVFCU will assume the operations of Putnam Federal Credit Union effective July 1. On that day, the former Putnam Federal Credit Union offices in Carmel, at 1995 Route 6, and in Brewster, at the Brewster Towne Centre on Route 22, will open under the HVFCU name. Full Story

Two residents of Putnam County are among 74 defendants named responsible for a boating crash on Candlewood Lake in Connecticut. The crash occurred two years ago and resulted in the death of two men and an injury to three others. Full Story
DWI Arrests Mount as Summer Gets Underway
The summer has arrived and the incidence of DWI throughout the area continues to increase.
State Police made numerous arrests in recent days.
Somers State Police charged John Curtis, 38, of Carmel, after stopping his car at 3am on Route 684 in North Castle. In addition to DWI, Curtis was charged with operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .13 percent. Full Story
Maritime Police Hook Man for BWI on the Hudson
Now that summer has arrived, members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department Marine Division and the Carmel Police Department’s Marine Division are on patrol morning, noon and night keeping the Hudson River, Lake Oscawana in Putnam Valley, and Lake Mahopac safe for those who enjoy water recreation. Child Advocacy Center Works to Reduce Drowning
Each day ten people drown somewhere across the United States.
The Centers for Disease Control reported last week 3,582 drowning deaths in 2009 as well as the startling fact that drowning was the second leading cause of unintentional fatality for children aged newborn to 18 for the past 15 years. Full Story

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef wants to remind young adults how important it is to register to vote, and why returning college students and recently graduated high school seniors who have turned 18 should not put off this important task.
