10U Pirates lose to Kent, Defeat Armonk, Yonkers
The Patterson Pirates 10 and under baseball team had a solid week last week, winning two games while losing one.
The Pirates were defeated by Kent 5-4 on Sunday. That came after a 7-6 victory over Armonk on Saturday and a 9-3 win over Yonkers on Thursday.
Patterson’s record stood at 6-4 as of press time.
In the seven-inning loss to Kent at Peckham Park in Patterson, Matt Vitro pitched three innings for the Pirates and gave up three runs while striking out five batters. He also hit a double.
Henry Flocco also had a single and scored twice while Mike Telesco made a great throw from centerfield to throw a runner out at the plate, which kept the game tied.
Despite the loss, coach John Earl was proud of how his team played.
“We ended up losing but it was a good game,” he said. “We did make a lot of good plays.”
In the 7-6 victory over Armonk at home, Ryan Wynne picked up the victory for the Pirates by pitching three innings. Mike Ercole also pitched for Patterson.
“We played very well,” Earl said. “The Armonk kids had good hitters in their lineup.”
In the Pirates’ 9-3 win over Yonkers on the road last Thursday, Vitro pitched three innings while Nick Consolato and Tom Blaenkle each pitched in relief to contribute to a strong pitching performance.
Earl believes that one of the most important things to come out of this game was that Chris Collins got a single, making it the third game in a row in which he has gotten a hit. Prior to that streak, Collins had been struggling at the plate. Earl thinks that it would be a big boost for his team if Collins gets on track.
It was difficult for the coach to pick out individual performances for this game because everybody did their part to help the team.
“They all played well,” Earl said. “The Yonkers game I feel was a good group effort.”
Patterson was to play Yorktown earlier this week after press time. Their next game will be Friday at Putnam Valley beginning at 6 p.m. The Pirates will then face Brewster on the road on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
