12U Kent White Sox Split over the Weekend

Mike Horton
KENT—The 12 and under Kent White Sox had an up and down weekend. On Sunday the team lost to Bedford Hills, 7-1, but on Saturday the Sox beat local rival Carmel, 7-1. One game there was little to no hitting for them and in the other game the offense clicked at just the right time.

“Sunday was frustrating,” said coach Allan Spiridigliozzi. “We couldn’t hit at all, the other pitcher shut us down. They just hit the ball well and got good pitching. We didn’t play horrible, the defense was there but we just couldn’t hit.”

Francesca got the win for Bedford Hills, he went seven innings and whiffed 10 batters off only five hits. Sam Ferranto was handed the loss for Kent, he pitched three innings and gave up five runs.

Kevin Daly had the only RBI for Kent and Ferranto had a double. Other than that Shane O’Neill, Brett Delryple and Brian Sposato had the only other hits for Kent.

Saturday was the bright spot for the Sox as they beat Carmel, 7-1. It was 3-1 going into the fifth inning when they put up four runs, that was more than enough for O’Neill who pitched a gem.

“Shane was great,” said coach Spiridigliozzi. “He kept us in the game and gave us some time to get the bats going.”

O’Neill went seven innings and gave up one run off two hits, he also struck out five in the win. Bjorkander got the loss for Carmel, he went three innings and gave up only two runs, Willman came in after him and gave up five runs in three innings.

Ferranto went 3-for-3 with two RBI, O’Neill went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, Sposato had two RBI, John Maolini went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Delryple had two hits in the win.

“We chipped away and then broke it open,” said coach Spiridigliozzi. “Then we finished the job and closed it out. Before the fifth inning it was a close game, thankfully Shane’s great pitching kept us in it. It was a pretty good game and we are happy about the win.”

Today (Thursday) the Sox will travel to Lewisboro for a game at 8 pm and on Friday they face New Castle at Ryan’s field at 6 pm.
