Kent 10U Squad Gets Back on Track with Wins

Mike Horton
KENT—The 10 and under Kent White Sox had a rough start to the season, losing the first seven straight games. This weekend the Sox got their first two wins, a 5-4 nail biter over local rival Patterson on Sunday and a 14-4 rout of Yorktown the day before.

After a long losing streak Kent had a chance to start a short two game winning streak on Sunday against crosstown rival Patterson, they won 5-4 in extra innings. They had a 3-0 lead after the third but Patterson finally got on the board with two runs in the fourth. Kent came back and scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2, but Patterson scored a run in the fifth and then another in the sixth to tie it before Vince Scarduzio knocked in the gamewinning RBI with a walk-off single.

“The kids always get excited for these games,” said coach Frank Benitez. “I felt confident coming off a win and the kids did too. This is a good win because they are a pretty good team.”

Scarduzio was the winning pitcher for Kent, he went two innings and only gave up one run. George Love started the game, he threw the first five innings, gave up three runs and struck out seven batters.

Shane Delryple went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Mike Calcagno went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, Kenny Benitez had a two RBI single and Scarduzio went 2-for-4 with the game winning RBI. Nick Porosi and Love also added two singles each.

On Saturday Kent handled Yorktown in only four innings. By the start of third inning the score was only 6-4 in favor of Kent, it seemed like it was going to be a tight game. By the end of the fourth everybody was heading home and Kent had their first win of the summer.

“It was nice to win like that,” said Benitez. “We have been on the wrong side of those games. We got good defense, which is usually our Achilles heel so it was good to not hurt ourselves this time around. The pitching was there too, those were two big reasons we won.”

Calcagno got the win for Kent, he went all four innings, gave up four runs and earned three strike outs.

Dylan Maglio went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Tom Fava had a two RBI double and Benitez, Porosi, Delryple and Calcagno each had RBI’s in the win.

Thursday the Sox face Somers at 6 pm at Ryan’s field.
