Patterson 12U Gold Splits Two Games

B.J. O’Brien

The Patterson Pirates 12 and under Gold baseball team, which will be heading upstate to play in a tournament in Cooperstown next month, lost to the Patterson12U Black Team 15-8 on Sunday night, after defeating Lewisboro 16-2 on Saturday. Both games took place at Peckham Park in Patterson.

In Sunday’s loss to the Patterson Black team, Brenna Melchiori took the loss on the mound. According to coach Rob Marturano, his pitcher had trouble with his footing on the mound, which caused him to lose control and not be able to throw as hard.

“He could not get comfortable,” Marturano said. “He had a lot of walks and could not get location. He was struggling with his footing and planting down.”

After falling behind 8-1, Marturano’s team was able to make a game of it by scoring five runs in the third inning.

However, the Black team was able to add on some more runs. Marturano pointed out that two of his best pitchers could not go that day, which did create problems. Nonetheless, he did not use that as an excuse and credited the opposing team’s hitters with doing a good job.

“We were not able to do enough to keep them from scoring,” Marturano said.

In the victory over Lewisboro, Ryan Train picked up the win on the mound for the Pirates by pitching five innings and giving up two unearned runs. The game was ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Marturano was impressed with Train’s performance. He pointed out that the youngster throws a variety of pitches and can throw them all for strikes.

“He has an idea of what he wants to do,” Marturano said. “He has a game plan. He was able to throw (all of his pitches) for strikes.”

Train also contributed at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases. Designated hitter Connor Noah also had two singles in the game and Brennan Melchiori made some nice plays at third base.

The Pirates were scheduled to play Lewisboro and Kent earlier this week, but both games took place after press time.
