Howard Cole Hart wel Aug. 28, 1925 – July 4, 2010 Howard Cole Hart wel Aug. 28, 1925 – July 4, 2010 Howard Cole Hartwell, 84, of Hanson, Kentucky, passed away July 4, 2010, at home surrounded by family. He was born August 28, 1925, in Danbury, the son of the late Robert Gavin and Velma Cole Hartwell.

Mr. Hartwell served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, with most of his time spent in the Pacific on the submarine tender, USS Eurayle. After discharge, he worked as a surveyor for Irish Engineering and attended college. He received a bachelor’s degree from Cortland State University in Cortland, NY and a master’s degree from Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

He married Beverly Florence Walker on June 26, 1948, and together raised their family in Mahopac. He taught English in the Carmel public school system while also working as a police officer for the Town of Carmel. Howard and Beverly retired originally to Punta Gorda, Fla., in 1980, before moving to Kentucky in 2005. He was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron, S.W. Florida, and enjoyed boating, fishing, and playing his guitar.

Mr. Hartwell is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Beverly; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Lynn Hartwell of Mahopac; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and John Hunt of Hanson, KY; and daughter and son-inlaw, Robin and Robert Rosic of Darien, CT. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Keith Hartwell of Hyde Park, NY, James Hartwell of Mahopac; Ashley Hunt Fitz of Nashville, TN; John Hunt Jr. of Hanson, KY; Cole M. Hunt of Hanson, KY; and Shannon Hartwell Rosic of Darien, CT. Mr. Hartwell was also the proud greatgrandfather of Aidan, Christopher and Nicholas Hartwell of NY as well as Maxwell Franklin Hunt of KY. His surviving sister, Jean Hartwell Odell, resides in Paradise, California.

The funeral service for Mr. Hartwell was held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Madisonville, KY on Wednesday, July 14th at 11am.

A memorial service will be held at the Cargain Funeral Home, Inc. 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, at 11am on July 31, 2010. Interment will follow at Raymond Hill Cemetery, Carmel.
