Cubs Rally Against Brewster, Fall to Mahopac

CARMEL—With their season winding down the Carmel Cubs U-10 team got a chance to see where they stand against potential playoff opponents. The Cubs (8-5) took on two teams ahead of them in the standings and got a split, losing 8-2 to Mahopac on Tuesday before beating Brewster 8-7 with a late inning rally on Thursday.

The Cubs scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and won the game when Artie Shofi scored on a wild pitch.

“It was a good comeback against a top team,” said coach Tom Mills. “I think it will help us as we push for the playoffs.”

Tyler Parshley and Ryan Beauschene each had two RBIs, while Max Ryerson, Mike Prestopino and James Peterman all added RBIs of their own.

Peter Mills started for the Cubs and pitched two innings, Shofi came on in relief and pitched the final four innings to earn the win.

Like they did against Brewster, the Cubs found themselves in an early hole, but this time they couldn’t battle their way out. Due to some sloppy fielding the Cubs put themselves behind from the very beginning.

“We’ve made too many errors,” Mills said. “We were down six after the second inning, and lot of it was on errors, three of the runs they scored were unearned.”

Once again Mills made the start for the Cubs, and eventually gave way Beauschene. In addition to their struggles in the field, the Cubs struggled to get much going offensively. Parshley led the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Ryerson had one hit and an RBI.

The Cubs will continue their push for the playoffs with a game against North Salem at Crane Road tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m., and will play Ossining at Camarda Park on Saturday at 11 a.m.
