Brewster Boys Soccer Team Looks to Improve

BREWSTER—The Brewster High boys soccer team had a decent season last year, but second-year coach Scott Potusek is looking for more this fall.

Jorge Lopez SKIP PEARLMAN Jorge Lopez SKIP PEARLMAN Last year’s Bears beat Peekskill in the playoffs before losing to Lakeland, 1-0, to end their season.

Graduation hit the team hard, but Potusek is expecting another strong season.

“We lost a lot of seniors, but we have a good group coming up,” he said. “I think we have some potential, we have a lot of hard workers. We’re in a more difficult league, but I think the team can be good.”

Key losses to graduation include All-Section midfielder Alex Minsker, ASHM forward Ryan Williams (led the team in scoring) and All-League defender Brian Emery.

Potusek and the Bears will look to senior team captain and goalie Jason DiNardo, and junior defender Connor Kirkpatrick, two of the more experienced players on the squad.

“Jason and Connor can provide leadership on and off the field,” the coach said. “They can communicate the system… the way we do things. They’re both strong players with good attitudes.”

Also returning are junior keeper Tim Ho, junior midfielder Nick Corrao, senior midfielder Nick Ferrandino, sophomore right mid Neil Williams and senior forward Jorge Lopez.

Freshman forward Ed Cerrato, soph midfielder Eric Minsker, soph midfielder Dom Salgian, junior defender Kyle McAlpin and senior defender/midfielder Nick Ghelarducci join the team this fall.

Brewster will compete in League 1B this fall, along with Carmel, Mahopac, Yorktown, Somers and John Jay CR.

“Competing in the league could be tough, considering all the starters we lost,” Potusek said. “But with hard work and a good attitude – which we are getting – I think we can expect some good things.”

Brewster was scheduled to open the 2010 season Tuesday September 14, hosting Hen Hud at 4:30 p.m.
