Blessing of the Animals at Gilead

Three dozen animals received special blessings a week ago Sunday at the Gilead Presbyterian Church in Carmel.
The Rev. Martin Megeachy officiated over a Blessing of the Animals when dogs and cats were consecrated by the minister during a 15-minute service outside the church on Seminary Hill Road.
Eleven-year-old Julia Moody brought her dog Jasper to the event, who sat cradled in the child’s arms: “Every living creature needs blessing— dogs as well as people.”
The reverend agreed, telling the Courier: “We never give enough back. God has given us so much grace. It is our responsibility to care for the earth and to be mindful for those who cannot take care of themselves, including the animals entrusted to us. We ask God’s blessing upon them, as well as ourselves, to enable us to nurture these wondrous creatures in a loving way.”
Following the blessing, a plate was circulated among the outdoor congregation, where donations were made to the Putnam Humane Society.
