School District Taxpayers Receive Pleasant Surprise
For residents living in the Mahopac School District who received their tax bills last week, there was a reduction in tax rate—what was a 3.87 percent tax rate increase, is now 2.5 percent.
Superintendent of Schools Thomas Manko told the COURIeR since property assessment in the Town of Carmel increased, the board was able to decrease the tax rate by more than one percent.
Assistant Superintendent David Chapman said the tax rate for Carmel increased from $35.68 per $1,000 of assessed property value to $36.52 per $1,000 while in Putnam Valley, the school tax rate increased from $19.06 per $1,000 to $21.14.
The school tax bill for the average home in the district rose by about $200 for the new school year. —Eric Gross
