Marlyd T. “Bill” Pettey

Marlyd T. “Bill” Pettey, 86, of East Lykers Rd. in the Town of Root in Montgomery County, died Tuesday evening September 14 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law after a long illness.

Mr. Pettey was born February 17, 1924 in Philadelphia, MS, a son of Marks R. and Lyda (Tolbert) Pettey. He graduated from Philadelphia High School in Mississippi and moved to Stormville in 1943 and to the Town of Root 11 years ago. He was owner/operator of M.T. Pettey, Inc. in Stormville for many years, doing general building for commercial and residential customers.

Bill attended the Charleston Christian Church. He enjoyed building and cabinet making and held a private pilot’s license operating recreational aircraft. He served his country during WWII in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic.

He married Virginia J. (Adams) Pettey on June 2, 1943. She predeceased him on March 10, 2008.

Survivors include six children, Kenneth M. Pettey of Root, Margina Knapp of Carmel, Cecilia White of Glens Falls, Bill S. (Linda) Pettey of Root, John D. (Christine) Pettey of Pleasant Valley, and Dawn Melanson of Carmel; his second wife Dorothy “Betty,” whom he married May 2, 2010; two brothers George “Tim” (Robin) Pettey of Ponitock, MS, and Joe (Janet) Pettey of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Frances Parker of Newelton, LA; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at Monday September 20 at the Charleston Christian Cemetery, Charleston Four Corners.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Pettey to Catskill Area Hospice, 795 E. Main St. Suite #11, Cobleskill, NY 12043.
