ROBERT ZAPPOLO, SR.

Robert Zappolo, Sr., passed away in Lake Havasu, Arizona on October 21, 2010. Formally of Lake Carmel, he was born on August 4, 1929, son of the late Vincent and Catherine Mannle Zappolo and devoted brother to the late V. James Zappolo. Robert attended school in Carmel before serving in the Navy from 1948-1951. During his service he was stationed in Alaska and was a proud Veteran of the Korean War.

Robert was the faithful husband of Wanda Jensen, whom he married on September 20, 1958, at the Lady of the Lake Church in Lake Carmel, and beloved father to son, Robert, Jr., and daughter, Deidre.

A devoted member of the Operating Engineers of North America, Local 137, he retired after 39 years of service. Robert was an active member of the Putnam County community, serving on the Town of Kent Democratic committee and Recreation committee. He was instrumental, along with close friends Jerry Gugliemo and Larry Berrile, organizing and developing the Kent Knights football program. A devoted member of the Elks Club for 45 years he served in Brewster and he continued at the lodge in Lake Havasu, AZ, always volunteering for spaghetti night.

“Poppy” will be sorely missed by his adoring family; wife, Wanda; son, Robert; and daughter in law, Margaret; daughter, Deidre; and son in law Jeff; six beloved grandchildren, Kayla, Mackenzie, Danny, Devon, Alexa, and Connor. He always enjoyed being with his family and friends and everyone always had a great time when he was present.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 27, at 1pm at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Lake Carmel.
