Austin, Ruth L., age 72, a lifelong resident of Holmes, NY, died Monday, November 22, 2010.

Mrs. Austin was born on May 27, 1938 in Pecksville, NY to Mabel (Sprague) Smith of Holmes, NY and the late Watson Smith. She graduated from Carmel High School.

Mrs. Austin was a bus driver for the Carmel Central School District for many years. Prior to and following this position, Mrs. Austin spent many years of devotion in assisting the elderly in need by providing meals, transportation to doctors appointments and companionship. She was very giving, loving and was always there.

In addition to being a doting grandmother, Mrs. Austin enjoyed knitting, baking, tending to her house plants and hunting. She crafted many a Halloween costume in her day and took pride in participating in the lost art of handwritten letters to all she knew.

Mrs. Austin is survived by her son Glen Austin and his wife Michelle of Carmel; two daughters, Kim Hughes and her husband Doug of Newport, NC and Kathy Moore and her husband Tim of Hellertown, PA; a brother, Gerald Smith of Wyalusing, PA, and a sister, Shirley Smith of Holmes, NY. Also five grandchildren, Joshua and his wife Allie, Melissa, Johntaylor, Joe and Andrew.

A funeral service was held Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Dwyer Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Patterson. Interment followed at Russell Meade Cemetery, Town of Kent.
