Sean Hamilton of Brewster died Monday, December 13, 2010, at home after a brief illness. He was 80 years old.

Mr. Hamilton was born July 2, 1930 in Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland, son of the late Patrick and Mary (Horan) Hamilton. He graduated from Technical School in Ballyhaunis, Ireland, worked in England prior to immigrating to the United States in 1956, and settled in Brooklyn.

On November 17, 1956, he married Bridie Heneghan in St. Cecilia’s Church in Brooklyn. They moved to Brewster in 1973 and became members of St. Lawrence O’Toole Church. Mr. Hamilton retired from management with New York Telephone in New York, NY, in 1992, after 36 years.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Lawrence Council, past President of the Tonetta Lake Park Association, past Chairman of the American Red Cross in Putnam County, past President of the Emerald Association of Putnam County, and a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Putnam County.

Besides his wife Bridie of Brewster, Mr. Hamilton is survived by five children—Sean Hamilton of Brewster; Patrick Hamilton of Burlington, CT; Maureen Fitzgibbons of Hartwood, VA; Daniel Hamilton of Dover Plains; Patricia Corey of Hyde Park; five sisters— Patricia Roberts of Partry, Ireland; Gertrude O’Neill of Sydney, Australia; Dympna LeBihan of Paterson, NJ; Maureen Pedersen of Lading, Denmark; Anastasia Shuker of Harrogate, England; and ten grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Richard, a brother Patrick, and a sister, Lilly Hamilton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 18, at 11:30am at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Brewster. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence O’Toole cemetery, Brewster. Friends may call at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, on Thursday and Friday from 4 to 8pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Hamilton’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.
