Joseph Steeley, 82, a resident of Poughquag for 17 years and formerly of Patterson, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

Born in Oneida, NY, on February 8, 1928, he was the son of the late Capt. Joseph and Ruth (Jertsen) Steeley. He served his country as a United States Marine beginning in 1944 during World War II. He was recalled to the Marine Corps during the Korean War where he completed a combat tour of duty, engaging with enemy combatants. After his discharge from active duty, he received his Bachelors Degree from the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University.

Mr. Steeley worked for 35 years as a Wildlife Biologist for the N.Y.S. Department of Environmental Conservation, retiring in 1992.

An avid hunter and trapper his entire life, Mr. Steeley was also an accomplished bowler. After retirement he became an active member with the Senior Swingers League of Carmel.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Morita) Steeley at home; two sons, Christopher of Cooperstown, and Joseph of Poughquag; two daughters, Linda Akin of Patterson, and Jill Steeley of Beacon; three sisters, Kristin Mastro of Ulster Park, Karen Steeley of Lake George, and Stephanie Wilhelm of Carlisle, PA; and six grandchildren, David, Matthew, and Andrew Akin, and Michael, Lisa, and Kimberly Steeley.

Visitation was January 28 at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling. A service was conducted at the funeral home on January 30.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to the Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Avenue, Hyde Park, NY 12538.
