Early Morning Fire Damages Lake Carmel Automotive Business

by Eric Gross

Arctic-like conditions greeted firefighters from several departments early Sunday when a blaze broke out in an apartment above Chris' Automotive Service on Route 52 in Lake Carmel.

A passerby noticed smoke at 3:30am and contacted the Putnam 911 Center which dispatched Kent Police. Officers arriving minutes later confirmed a working fire and the Lake Carmel FD was notified.
Firefighters arrived minutes later and when a heavy concentration of smoke was observed, mutual aid was requested from the Carmel, Kent and Brewster Fire Departments.

Volunteers not only battled the fire and smoky conditions but the frigid cold since the morning temperature was only 9 degrees freezing water on contact with the pavement and making footing exceptionally treacherous for the fire crews.

The blaze was contained to an upstairs apartment. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
