JAMES TORMEY

On March 28, 2011, Former Lake Carmel resident James Tormey passed away peacefully and of natural causes at the home of his daughter Virginia Riggs. He was 84 years old.

Mr. Tormey was born August 4, 1926, in Dundee, NY, to William and Jessica (Moody) Tormey. James served aboard ship in the US Navy during World War II. While on shore leave he met his bride of 40 years, Joan McGuire, in Central Park in New York City, eventually settling and raising a family in Lake Carmel, where they lived for over twenty years.

Mr. Tormey was active in his community as a volunteer firefighter for the Lake Carmel Fire Department for more than 20 years, advancing to the rank of Captain; he was one of the founding Directors for the award-winning Young Colonials Fyfe and Drum Corps; he served in various positions for Cub Scout Pack One; and was an usher at Saint James and Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church. He worked for the Carmel Central School District as a custodian/bus driver and eventually a facilities manager for Patterson Elementary School before retiring and relocating to Brooksville, FL.

James is loved and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his seven children and their spouses, fifteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. His children and their spouses are Carolyn and Nagi Abdalla of Kissimmee, FL; Janice and Charles Mc- Corkendale of Vancouver, WA; James Tormey Jr. of Pace, FL; W.W. Anthony and Dorothy Tormey of Whitehall, PA; Elizabeth and Mike Jones of Weston MA; Virginia and Mike Riggs of Dade City, FL; and Garrett and Bree Tormey of Brooksville, FL.

On April2aviewingandCatholic services were held at Turner Funeral Home in Springhill, FL. His ashes will be set alongside his beloved wife in the Veterans’ section of Florida Hills Memorial Gardens in Brooksville, FL.
