Eugene B. “Gene” Daniels, 78, a resident of Pawling for 46 years and formerly of Carmel, passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 5, 2011, at the Castle Point Veteran’s Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Farmers Mills, NY, on December 22, 1932, Gene was the son of the late James H. and Catherine (Brown) Daniels.

Gene graduated from Carmel High School in 1949 and proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Corporal in the Tank Division 33rd Infantry during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on Dec. 31, 1960. He married Veronica C. Brunow on March 22, 1966 in Pawling and celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this past March.

He was a hardworking man who was previously employed by HEATX, D&S Pump Service, co-owner of Brunow’s Gas and Propane Service, a safety officer at Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center, a Town of Pawling Constable, and retired as a NYS Youth Division Aide at Harlem Valley Secure Center in Wingdale in 1993.

He was a lifelong member of the Pawling Fire Dept., where he was an EMT and a member of the Hose Company. He was given the Honor of Fireman of the Year on April 18, 1998, and recently served as Commissioner. He was also a VFW Lifetime Member of Post #672 in Brewster.

Gene loved to hunt, fish, ride motorcycles, work on cars, carpentry, and flying planes. He especially loved spending time with family and taking family vacations in the family motor home.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica, at home; children, Jeanette of Pawling, James and Rebecca also of Pawling, William of Springfield, Vt., Lourdes of Beacon, and Susan of Woodbury, Ct.; granddaughters, Emma and Jessi; sister, Dorothy Furness; brother-in-law, Thomas Brunow and his wife, Lillian; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 E. Main St., Pawling on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Services will be conducted by the Pawling Fire Dept. at 7pm, VFW at 7:15pm, and Hasler-Kamp Post American Legion at 7:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 9, at 11am at St. John’s Church, 39 E. Main St., Pawling. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
