An elderly resident of Southeast and her daughter were killed Friday afternoon in a single car crash on Route 312 in Southeast.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department said the tragedy took place at 1:30 pm near Nancy Lane when for an unknown reason the vehicle being driven by Merrill Spaeth, 66, of Fishkill, drove off the road and plowed into a large tree.

Sheriff Don Smith told the Courier when Deputy William Quick arrived within minutes after receiving a 9-1-1 call reporting a serious crash he found both the driver and her mother, Marion Hunting, 92, of Tonetta Lake Way, Brewster, who was seated in the passenger seat, unresponsive.

Brewster FD Rescue Squad personnel were summoned and transported both women to Putnam Hospital Center where they were pronounced dead.

The sheriff said an investigation determined the women's car was headed westbound when it drove off the right shoulder of the road and collided head-on into the tree.
