James J. Durkin age 82, of Carmel, also of Hurley, NY, passed away on January 28, 2012, peacefully with his family by his side.

Mr. Durkin was born October 2, 1929, to the late Andrew J. and Mary (O’Brien) Durkin.

James was a 1947graduate of Brewster High School. He attended Fordham University and received a Bachelor’s degree in 1954 and served in the US. Army for 2 years, ending in 1957. Then, on June 27, 1959, he married the love of his life, Marian Fisher in Lake Carmel. Marian predeceased him in 1996.

James was a proud co- owner and operator of the family business Durkin Fuel Co. in Brewster. He was a lifetime member of the Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, on the foundation board, formerly on the board of directors, and served as past president.

He also was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Elks.

Later in life James found love again, and married Katharine Gaffken in Kingston, NY, on February 1, 2003. He had great faith, and was a member of the St. Joseph’s Parish in Kingston.

Most of all James will be remembered for his strength, and his love and devotion to his family and friends.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Katharine Gaffken Durkin of Hurley; his loving daughter Tracy Durkin of Pawling; three step-children, Mary Jane Sullivan of Voorheesville, John Gaffken of Hurley, and Eugene Gaffken of Paris, France; a Brother Andrew J. Durkin (Maureen ) of Brewster; and his sister Virginia (Joseph) Kaminski of Hingham, Mass., as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated on Wednesday, February 1st, 2012, at 11a.m. at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Brewster.

Family received friends at the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral home 27 Smith Ave, Kingston, NY, 12401 (845-331-3272) on Monday January 30, and at the Beecher Funeral Home 1 Putnam Ave Brewster, NY. 10509 (845-279-3615) on Tuesday January 31st , from 4pm to 8pm.

In lieu of flowers donations in James J. Durkin’s memory can be sent to Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, NY, or the American Cancer Society.

He will be greatly missed.
