Sifting Through the Sands of Time

GERMAN DRIVE IN PREPARATION ATTEMPT TO BREAK THROUGH ALLIES’ LINES TO CALAIS BELIEVED IMMINENT.

London, Feb. 4—Another great drive by the Germans in an attempt to break through the Allies’ lines and gain Calais was forecast in the war dispatches.

The Kaiser’s generals are reported to be rushing reinforcements to the western front, and to be massing immense bodies of infantry and artillery against though left wing of the Allies.

Heavy bombardments similar to those which have preceded all important movements are in progress, especially in the region of Loos, held by the British, and around Neuville, where the Germans in a series of dashes recently captured French positions.

Near the Bois des Buttes, north of the Aisne, the Germans hurled their Infantry against the French trenches in determined attacks, but failed to drive their way through and fell back after suffering big losses. In the region of Hulluch the British are carrying out mining operations, which are reported to have met with success.

London papers reported that Field Marshal von Mackensen, General von Gallwitz, Czar Ferdinand, the Bulgarian Crown Prince Boris and General Jekoff arrived at the Greek frontier. The Greek newspapers believe the attack against Saloniki is about to begin.

Three survivors of the British collier Frank Fisher, who were picked up by a Belgian steamship and landed at Hartlepool, England, brought word of the destruction of their vessel by a German Zeppelin in the North Sea.

They asserted that the huge German aircraft showered a rain of bombs upon the collier.

This is the first time that a vessel has been sunk by a Zeppelin, previous exploits of this nature having been accomplished both by Allied and German aeroplanes.

EXPLOSION CAUSED FIRE

Hespeler, Ontario—An explosion was responsible for the fire which destroyed the shell department of the A.V. Jardine foundry, according to statements made by Chief of Police Thomas Wilson.

A man believed to be an Austrian, who gave the name of John Schmidt, is under arrest on suspicion of having been implicated in starting the fire.
