Edward Schmitt, 42, of Poughkeepsie passed away peacefully on February 12, 2012, surrounded by those who loved him deeply. Ed was born on January 13, 1970, son of Bob and Peggy Schmitt. He grew up in Mahopac.

Ed graduated from Mahopac High School, received his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Oneonta, and his Master’s from Fordham University. Ed was a much-loved social studies teacher at Putnam Valley High School. His love for teaching and dedication to his students and his Putnam Valley family were apparent to all.

On April 10, 1999, Ed married the love of his life, Karen Evans, of Poughkeepsie. They have three beautiful young children, Timothy, Maggie Jean, and Kyle. Ed was a devoted husband and father. Nothing made him happier than being with his family.

Ed was the kindest and most selfless person many had ever met. Throughout 11 years of illness, he was more concerned about others than himself. He was the picture of grace and courage throughout his battle, and very honestly, he never complained once. His life has, and will, continue to inspire so many.

Ed is survived by his wife and children, his father, Bob Schmitt of Cold Spring; his brother, Rob Schmitt and wife, Kelly, of Belle Harbour, NY; his brother, Don Schmitt, and wife, Cynthia, of Bedford; his grandfather, Edward Dunne of Holmes, and grandmother, Alice Schmitt, of San Diego. Ed was also loved and will be missed dearly by many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Ed was predeceased by his mother, Peggy Dunne Schmitt, his grandmother, Margaret Dunne, his grandfather, Charles Schmitt, and uncle, Edward Dunne.

The funeral service was February 18 at The Reformed Church, Poughkeepsie, followed by burial at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to The Reformed Church, Organ Fund, in Ed’s memory.
