Remy V. “Flash” Mauer, 81, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2012, in Mamaroneck, NY. Remigius Mauer was born June 28, 1930, to Ludwig and Elsie (Steiner) Mauer in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where he was raised and graduated from high school.

He was an avid sportsman and athlete: three time All-American 50yd. swimmer, 440 hurdler, and water polo player. In his youth, he worked on farms in the Midwest and always felt an affinity with the land. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and attended college in New York. While swimming at the Hotel St. George, he met his wife, Caroline (Mayer) and they married August 2, 1952.

In 1958, the couple moved to Mahopac where they ran the Mahopac Gulf Station until 1973. He worked for the Town of Carmel as Superintendent of Vehicle Maintenance and the Secor Water District before taking a job with Chase in NYC, from which he retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Caroline, and Benjamin Farquhar, who was like a son to him. He is survived by his daughters: Caroline Palmer (Robert), Jeanne Cason, Marilyn Norton, and Cheryl Gardinier (John); his brother Bruno and sister Rita; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving companion, Myrna Farquhar, her son Allan (Cara) and their daughters, and all his surrogate sons.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution to Hospice of Westchester and Putnam.

A celebration of life will be held at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home, 692 US Route 6, Mahopac on Monday, March 5, from 2-4pm & 6-8pm. Burial will be at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on March 6th.
