Mary Jenkins Nichols, wife, mother, grandmother and family matriarch, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, March 18, in Carmel. She was 87.

Mary was born on October 8, 1923, in New Paltz, New York, a descendant of the French Huguenots, the original settlers of New Paltz.

Valedictorian of New Paltz High School and a graduate of SUNY New Paltz, Mary began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Gardiner, NY, and continued her career in the Carmel Central School District.

Mary instilled a strong sense of family for her husband, three children, and seven grandchildren. Within our family, she created many wonderful memories and always supported us fully. Her presence and love enriched our well-being. We will love her always.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bill, of 61 years, along with her children: Marjorie Nichols Keith (David) of Carmel; William J. Nichols (Nancy) of Seattle; and Neta Nichols Sacks (Robert) of Pound Ridge; and her grandchildren: David W. Keith (Nicole), Alana N. Keith, Ryan F. Nichols, Renee E. Nichols, Christopher R. Sacks, Drew L. Nichols, and Sean N. Sacks.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 22, at Cargain Funeral Homes, Inc., 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, NY, 845-225-3672. A Service will be held at the funeral home, on Friday, March 23, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Raymond Hill Cemetery. Remembrances can be made in-lieu of flowers to Putnam Hospital Center Foundation; attention: Anita Minella, 670 Stoneleigh Ave. Carmel, New York 10512.
