Two second place winners in Mega Millions sold in Putnam

It's not first, but it's not bad

It's not $640 million—but $250,000 isn't bad either.

While three ticket holders in Kansas, Maryland and Illinois selected the winning numbers in Friday's Mega Millions jackpot and will split the top prize of $640 million, two second place tickets were sold in Putnam County.

Carolyn Hapeman, a spokeswoman for the NYS Lottery said 17 second place tickets were sold in New York State. One hundred ticketholders across the U.S. won second place by matching the first five numbers drawn: "The only difference between them and the top winners was their failure to select the Mega Ball number."

The special Putnam tickets were sold at the X-tra Mart on Main Street in Brewster and at the A.F. Minimart on Route 6 in Mahopac.

Clerks at each business had no comment when contacted on Saturday.

Hapeman said it would be "up to the winner to come forward. Many times winners wish to remain anonymous which is their prerogative."

Other second place tickets in New York were sold on Long Island, New York City, Westchester, and upstate in the Syracuse area.
