A 20-year-old Brewster man is recovering from an 8-inch stab wound to the back after being attacked Sunday night in the upstate city of Herkimer.

Herkimer Police Sgt. John Long would not identify the victim telling the Courier: "The man requested that his identity remain anonymous and since he was not charged with any crime we abided by his request."

Sgt. Long said the attack took place at 10:45 p.m. outside a gasoline station on the city's west side. Authorities said the victim became embroiled in a verbal altercation that became physical at a Main Street apartment building: "The two suspects followed the victim to the service station and allegedly stabbed him before fleeing," said the sergeant.

The Putnam man was taken to a local hospital where according to Sgt. Long was treated for his "non-life threatening injuries before being released."

The two perpetrators fled the scene and authorities upstate are on the lookout for the two men.
