Hell's Angel from Putnam Sentenced in Firearms Case

Lengthy record contributed to prison time

An admitted member of the Hell's Angels motorcycle club will be calling a federal penitentiary home for the next 15 years after being found in the possession of a firearm.

Christian Rufino, 42, was arrested in December 2009 in Cranston, Rhode Island. He pleaded guilty to the charges last August.

In U.S. District Court Providence Friday afternoon, a judge sentenced the Putnam resident to the lengthy prison term because of his previous criminal record.

The U.S. Department of Justice said in 1990 Rufino was arrested for bank robbery and witness intimidation in Maine. Five years later, he was charged with assault and battery in Massachusetts and Rufino in 1998 the Brewster resident was arrested for armed robbery with the intent to murder in Rhode Island.

Authorities said in the 2009 case, a police officer stopped Rufino's rental car on I-95 for speeding and when questioning the man he reportedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana. A search of the vehicle's trunk turned up a quantity of cocaine as well a loaded .38 caliber handgun and ammunition.

The Justice Department said due to Rufino's lengthy criminal record he was sentenced as a repeat violent offender.
