Vincent G. Roberto Sr.
Vincent G. Roberto Sr., a longtime resident of Mahopac, and formerly of Yonkers, died Thursday April 19, 2012. He was 90.
He was born in Yonkers on May 24, 1921, the son of Dr. Romeo and Ellen Smith Roberto. He graduated from the N.Y. Military Academy in 1939. He then attended Stevens Institute of Technology and left during World War II to work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a ship designer. A huge fan of jazz, Vin spent many nights at Nick’s in N.Y. City, famous for jazz music, where he met many of the jazz greats of that era.
Vincent was a machine designer at Phelps-Dodge Corp. in Yonkers for 25 years. Following his retirement at Phelps-Dodge he worked as a production supervisor for 5 years at Able Wire Co. in Seymour, Ct.
Vincent was a member of the Lake Mahopac United Methodist Church. He was a third degree Mason, Diamond Thistle Lodge 555 in HastingsonHudson, and a volunteer at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel for over 20 years. At the hospital, he was known as the “joke man” because he would bring short snippets of jokes to patients and staff alike during his shifts.
Vin was a 50-year member of the Lake Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Board of Fire Commissioners for 10 years. He was a past Chairman of the Board and had served other offices including department treasurer, secretary, captain of the fire police, and on various committees. He was a founding member and the first president of the Putnam-Northern Westchester Fire Police Association.
On August 12, 1950, he married Alice Pirzl in Yonkers. Alice died on August 21, 2009. He is survived by his sons, Vincent Jr. of Mahopac, Charles (Cheryl) of Croton-on-Hudson and Paul (Jeanine) of Milford, Mich.; his daughters, Gail Hladky (Harold) of Battle Creek, Mich., Rose Ellen Shannon (Tom) of Pheonixville, Pa., Beverly Carrigan (Pat) of Syracuse; and Wendy Jones, M.D. (David) of Nixa, Ms.; and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Linda, his brothers Romeo and Dr. Albert Roberto, and his sister, Nina Hancock.
Funeral services were held Monday April 23, 2012, at the Lake Mahopac United Methodist Church. Following private cremation services, Vincent will be interred at Union Valley Cemetery in Mahopac.
