Rabies Alert Issued For Mahopac Falls

by ERIC GROSS

Putnam Health Department officials have urged anyone coming into contact with a stray cat in Mahopac Falls from April 30 through May 4 to contact the health department immediately.

Health Director Rebecca Wittenberg told the Courier Monday that a stray found in the vicinity of Barrett Hill Road and Ernest Lane in the Mahopac Falls section of the Town of Carmel tested positive for the rabies virus last weekend.

Rabies has no cure and a series of inoculations may be required.

Wittenberg has asked anyone who might have touched the animal to call 808-1390, ext. 43160 to assess the need for treatment.

Wittenberg reminded the public that if treatment is initiated promptly following a rabies exposure, the disease can be prevented; however, "if rabies exposure is not treated and a person develops clinical signs of rabies, the disease almost always results in death.”
