Launching into the future after four years of diligent study, members of the Mount Saint Mary College Class of 2012 gave themselves a hug at the conclusion of ceremonies.  The commencement hug is a tradition at the Mount, instituted by Fr. Kevin Mackin OFM, Mount Saint Mary College president, a few years ago.

Fr. Mackin recognized 654 bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates during the outdoor ceremony, held May 19 on the campus overlooking the Hudson River.

Elizabeth Ailes, a 20-year veteran of network television news and publisher of The Putnam County News & Recorder and The Putnam County Courier, was the keynote speaker at the 49th annual commencement, encouraging the graduates to be “willing to outwork others. If you are tireless and demand excellence of yourself and your colleagues, you will succeed.”Elizabeth Ailes at Mount Saint Mary College's Commencement. Be ready to improvise, she said, and expect and embrace changes. Learn how to be flexible, encourage and help others and get up each morning and “say a prayer that today is another opportunity; today there is some worthwhile occasion that you will rise to,” said Mrs. Ailes, of Garrison.

The college also presented Mrs. Ailes an honorary doctorate of letters. Other honorary degree recipients included His Eminence Peter Cardinal Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace; and Joseph A. Reilly, CEO of the Empire Broadcasting Corporation.

Among the graduates were the children of four faculty members, each of whom presented a diploma to her son or daughter. That set included one Putnam County pair, nursing professor Jill Sussman and her daughter Melanie Sussman of Garrison, a human services major.

Other Putnam County graduates included: Elise Mier, Brewster; Amy Whalen, Brewster; Katherine Anderson, Carmel; Shannon Breslin, Carmel; Matthew Glaviano, Carmel; Leah Kotzur, Carmel; Elizabeth Leist, Carmel; MichaelO’Connor, Carmel; Bryan Prado, Carmel; Lauren Veteri, Carmel; Melinda Burke, Garrison; Donna Padilla, Garrison; Anthony Iraola, Mahopac; Jamie Nyarady, Mahopac; Christine Lauber, Patterson; Meagan Munsell, Putnam Valley; and Katelyn Sillery, Putnam Valley.
