Daring escape from Sheriff's Office in Carmel
A break-in, a manhunt, a capture, an interrogation, an escape, and a second manhunt -- Friday was a day to remember for law enforcement personnel in Putnam County.
Following a four-hour long manhunt that resulted in the arrests of two men wanted for burglarizing a residence on Shawnee Drive in Putnam Valley, one of the suspects escaped from the Putnam Correctional Facility while being interrogated by jumping out a window and falling 20 feet to the ground below.
Sheriff Don Smith told the PCNR and Courier that Christopher Rivera, 22, of Lake Peekskill who was apprehended in Jefferson Valley, was brought to the Sheriff's Office in Carmel for questioning -- and around 4:30 p.m., he suddenly bolted from an officer and jumped out the window.
An immediate all points bulletin was issued for the suspect on police frequencies throughout the region. State Police, Carmel and Kent Police and members of the Sheriff's Department scoured the area in vehicles and on foot while helicopters were called into assist. Residents of the Hamlet of Carmel received reverse 911 calls advising of the escape and were cautioned to be on the lookout for the "dangerous" individual.
Shortly before 6 o'clock, Rivera was captured off Route 6 near the Putnam Bike Trail, one half mile from the Sheriff's Office near the Fred Dill Conservation area. He was returned to the county jail under heavy police guard and was charged with felony counts of burglary, attempted burglary and escape.
His alleged accomplice, Peter Segreto, 24, of Putnam Valley, who the sheriff said was driving the get-away car, was apprehended shortly after the break-in and was also remanded to jail without bail.
The Putnam Valley Elementary School was locked down as a precautionary measure shortly after the break-in was reported and Superintendent Barbara Fuchs said at no time were students or staff in danger. The school's resource officer, who is stationed at the high school-middle school complex, went directly to the elementary building on Oscawana Lake Road.
