Station Commander Sgt. Joseph Malorgio said the crash occurred when for no apparent reason Virginia Tannison, 61, who was headed southbound crossed pavement markings and plowed head-on into the larger vehicle operated by David Picinelli, 47, of Stormville that was traveling in a northerly direction.

The impact pinned both drivers in their vehicles necessitating their extrication with the Jaws of Life.

Patterson FD personnel assisted by the Putnam Lake and Brewster Fire Departments responded. The two victims were taken to Danbury Hospital where Malorgio said the trucker was treated and released while the woman was admitted with massive leg and foot trauma.

Troopers issued Tannison a summons for failing to keep right.

Also assisting at the scene were paramedics from the Trans Care Ambulance Service.

Members of the Patterson FD Fire Police under the command of Lt. John Bodor handled traffic control and were forced to completely shut Route 22 for over an hour until the patients were stabilized, the wreckages removed and the accident investigation completed.
