Maria Angela Sciortino

Maria Angela Sciortino of Palm Coast, Florida, a former resident of Somers, NY, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 13th, surrounded by her loving family. She was 81 years old. Maria was born to the late Francesco and Caterina Fusca on March 26, 1931 in Vezzano, Italy.

She came alone to the United States in 1949 pursuing a career as a dressmaker until she met her husband, Raymond, while attending night school. They were married on April 16, 1955, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in White Plains and celebrated over 57 years together.

Maria was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, painting, drawing, and spending time with her family. She was an active member of the Italian American Club for 11 years. She is survived by her husband Raymond and their three sons, Anthony and his wife Sharon, Frank and his wife Melody, and Raymond and his wife Jackie; her grandchildren Amy and her husband Mark Obolewicz, Amanda, Julianna, Michael, Brian, Samantha, Luke, Julia and Mikayla; her precious great-granddaughter Elliana; her sisters, Flora, Jomarie and Theresa; and her brother Vincent as well as many dear nieces and nephews.

Maria was predeceased by her beloved sister Rosa and dear brothers Amedeo, Beniamino and Isidoro Fusca. Maria will be remembered for her ability to bring people to her table with her fabulous dinners of homemade pasta and meatballs, as well as her amazing honeyballs and cookies she loved to bake. She will especially be remembered by her family and friends of Florida for her devotion and selflessness as a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Maria will always be remembered as “Nonna” to her loving grandchildren and great-granddaughter who will miss her positive encouraging words of wisdom, “Work hard and be happy with what you do in life!” She was so proud of all of them.

Maria was gentle and kind with her beautiful smile and unconditional love. We will cherish the memories she gave to us and continue to share with each other the stories of her life. We will miss Maria dearly and never forget she loved us all the same. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House 150 Memorial Medical Parkway, Palm Coast Florida 32164.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, July 20, at Our Lady of the Lake Church, Lake Carmel. A private cremation followed.
