Nicholas DeBellis, most recently from the Villages, Florida, and a long time resident of the Carmel, NY, area, passed away on September 14th. Mr. DeBellis was born on March 13, 1942, in the Bronx, NY to Nicola and Lillian (DelGrosso) DeBellis. The family moved to Lake Carmel in 1959.
On August 6, 1960, he married Stephanie McCormack, also from Carmel, and they enjoyed a happy marriage of more than 50 years.
Mr. DeBellis worked for the Grand Union Company for more than 25 years and managed the store on Route 6 in Carmel, where many community members came to know and respect him. In 1984, he opened Mountaintop Market in Stormville and maintained a successful business there for the next 20 years before selling and working in sales for the Croton Farms company. He retired and moved to Florida in 2010.
Mr. DeBellis was known as “Uncle Nick” to many and was deeply respected in the community for his work ethic, character and family values. He was a selfless, hard working man who enjoyed having the opportunity to employ many of his relatives and their friends. In the process, he became a father figure to many who sought his counsel.
He was happiest when surrounded by his children, their spouses and his grandchildren. He felt they were his greatest legacy and source of pride.
He is survived by his loving wife Stephanie, his 4 children, their spouses and 7 grandchildren: Nick and his wife Susan (children Stephen and Alex), Dorene and her husband George Cleary (children Ryan, Lauren and Katelyn), Chris and his wife Mary (children Samantha and Julia) and Anthony and his wife Brenda. He is also survived by his sister Caroline and her husband Joseph Christian, his brother Joseph and his wife Mary and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Monday September 17, from 2-4 and 7-9 at Cargain Funeral Home in Carmel, 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, NY 10512 (845)225- 3672. A Funeral Mass was at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 18, at Our Lady of the Lake church in Lake Carmel. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in memory of Nicholas De- Bellis to a charity of your choice.
