Ball Blasts Journal News for Gun Database Story
Senator Greg Ball on Wednesday blasted the Journal News newspaper of White Plains, saying the paper’s map of gun permit holders amounts to targeting those gun owners as possible theft targets, and he said the map should be removed immediately.
The Journal News story, published Sunday, included an interactive map with names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. The newspaper said it also sought information for Putnam County, but doesn’t yet have it.
Ball, a rock-solid Second Amendment supporter, said he will introduce legislation in the New York State Senate to prevent future such disclosures.
“The asinine editors at the Journal News have once again gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law-abiding firearm owners throughout the region,” Ball said in a statement. “…The same elitist egg heads who use their editorial page to coddle terrorists and criminals are now treating law-abiding citizens like level three sexual predators. Am I surprised? No. Should every person with commonsense be offended? Yes. Furthermore, the Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs.”
Attempts to obtain comment from the Journal News were unavailing. In an earlier published statement, Janet Hasson, president and publisher of The Journal News Media Group, said: “New York residents have the right to own guns with a permit and they also have a right to access public information.”
