Explosion KO’s power throughout county seat

A transformer explosion on Route 6 at Church Street in Carmel early this morning knocked out electricity throughout the Putnam County seat.

Power was interrupted at 6:45 a.m. when the transformer atop a utility pole blew up.

Carmel firefighters were summoned and Assistant Chief Dave DiRienzo confirmed the explosion and requested crews from the New York State Electric and Gas Company.

Electric circuits were tripped by the initial interruption resulting in more than 5,000 residents and dozens of businesses throughout the hamlet being plunged into darkness. Sections of Lake Carmel were also affected by the interruption.

NYSEG estimated all power would be restored by 12 noon.
