Luck of the Irish
Call it the “luck of the Irish!”
Blue skies, golden sunshine and mild temperatures greeted some 10,000 people in Mahopac Sunday for Putnam’s 37th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Parade chairman Patrick Brophy marveled at the wonderful weather since 48 hours earlier a late winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow on sections of the county.
“The man upstairs is looking down on Putnam County today,” said Brophy who added: “I remember over the years we have marched in snow, sleet, rain—all with strong winds. We deserve a break and are all so pleased.”
County Executive Mary EllenOdell agreed: “What a day for everyone who is a ‘bit Irish’ today. Erin go Bragh! It’s the luck of the Irish all right.”
Parade Grand Marshall Timmy Maher described the occasion as “one of my finest. To be so recognized and honored is something beyond my wildest dreams.”
Maher’s name will forever be etched in Putnam’s Irish culture joining the ranks of other grand marshals including Russ Lavan, Maurice Foley, Brophy, Frank Cassidy, Judge John Sweeny, Mike McDonough, Kevin Bailey, Bill Keating and others who are parading in heaven—Congressman Hamilton Fish Jr., Ted Dwyer, Letitia Driscoll, Sean Hamilton and Molly McNellis.
Sunday’s parade, New York State’s third largest only behind the Manhattan parade and the festivities in Yonkers, featured six divisions consisting of 5,000 marchers. An additional 5,000 cheered the participants on as the parade traveled north along Route 6. To view a gallery of all images click HERE
